Downtown Grand Rapids this winter will host the uniquely interactive Prismatica public art installation at 555 Monroe Ave. NW in the Monroe North neighborhood.

Prismatica is a collection of light prisms that have toured the world, adding energy and creativity to urban neighborhoods and business districts. The interactive exhibit includes 25 pivoting prisms, each over six feet tall, mounted on projectors and set up to transmit and reflect every color in the visible spectrum, creating a rainbow ice palace.

"We're essentially building a giant kaleidoscope for people to play in on the banks of the Grand River," said Kimberly Van Driel, DGRI’s Director of Public Space Management. “We're thrilled to host this world-traveling public art exhibit in Downtown Grand Rapids, especially at the peak of winter. Prismatica will be a beautiful way to invite people outside - especially at night - enjoy a uniquely engaging public art experience and enliven Downtown during the cold weather months when we typically like to hibernate."

Prismatica was created by RAW Design in collaboration with ATOMIC3 and first premiered in Montreal in 2014. It has since been set up in France, England, Chicago and other major cities.

The Prismatica exhibit is free and open to the public and will run from January 17 to February 16, 2020. While it is available during the day, it is most intriguing to experience it in late afternoon and evening.

“Prismatica on Monroe” is one of many events during the annual World of Winter Festival that features free winter-themed programming, including (but not limited to) snow yoga, a silent disco, and the community-favorite Human Hungry Hungry Hippos Tournament on Ice. The festival runs from January 17 - February 16, 2020.
