Everyone has to use the bathroom at some point - whether you’re out bar-hopping before a concert, a person experiencing homelessness, a window-shopping visitor or a resident walking to work.

The Heartside Quality of Life Final Report in 2018 clearly identified “provid(ing) additional restrooms available to the general public and expand public restroom options" within the Heartside neighborhood as a key recommendation.

After extensive community conversation about how best to act on the community priority, Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. and the City of Grand Rapids identified the Portland Loo as the solution.

The Portland Loo is a stand-alone public restroom facility that is highly durable and easy to maintain. The Loo design also prioritizes safety and has proven successful in cities with similar climates such as Cincinnati and Vancouver.
